Consider the benefits of nature therapy

For many, the idea of finding some kind of therapeutic benefit in nature may seem like new age bunk. However, emerging research in the field of psychology suggests that connecting with nature is not just a pleasant pastime—it's a powerful form of therapy and may even help you fight cancer.

Why Nature?

Despite what you may think, the healing power of Nature Therapy is not solely about the fresh air or scenic views. It actually encompasses a holistic approach to well-being because it is an environment conducive to stress reduction and emotional restoration. Unless a bear is chasing you, being in the woods is extremely relaxing for a wide range of reasons:

  1. Air Quality: Thisis one of the few places where you breathe in fresh air, free from the pollutants often present in urban environments. Clean air is not just invigorating for the body, but also vital for mental clarity and overall health.

  2. Peaceful Surroundings: The quietude of nature provides a stark contrast to the constant noise and stimuli of our daily lives. Immersing yourself in this level of serenity convinces the mind to take a break and unwind, leading to calm and relaxation.

  3. Oneness with Nature: Not to get too "new-agey" on you but you'll never feel more connection with the environment than when you're in a forest or on a beach. This sense of oneness can be profoundly grounding, reminding us that we are part of a larger, harmonious ecosystem.

  4. Physical Activity: Nature therapy often involves physical activities such as walking, hiking, or simply sitting amidst the greenery. Physical exercise has been proven to reduce anxiety and improve overall mental health. It's a win-win no matter how you look at it.

In his 2018 book, Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness., researcher Qing Li writes that, "the sounds of the forest, the scent of the trees, the sunlight playing through the leaves, the fresh, clean air – these things give us a sense of comfort. They ease our stress and worry, help us to relax and to think more clearly. Being in nature can restore our mood, give us back our energy and vitality, refresh and rejuvenate us."

But can it help you fight cancer?

Surprisingly, the answer is yes. According to a study in PubMed, a day trip to a forest park increased something called human NK (natural killer) activity and the expression of anti-cancer proteins in male subjects. That shouldn't be surprising given how our physiology instantly changes when we're in nature. The study found that Phytoncides released from trees combined with decreased stress hormone levels may partially contribute to the increased NK activity.

Perhaps, this innate connection with the natural world is more than a temporary escape; it's a recalibration of our senses in an environment where we once thrived. A return to our roots, of sorts.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Nature Therapy

Here's a few things you can do to ensure you make the most of your walk through nature.

  1. Choose Your Setting: Opt for a natural environment that resonates with you, whether it's a nearby park, a forest trail, a beach, or a serene lakeside spot.

  2. Disconnect from Technology: Leave your phones behind or, at the very least, switch them to silent mode. Nature therapy is about tuning into the sounds of nature rather than notifications.

  3. Engage Your Senses: As you walk or sit, engage your senses deliberately. Notice the colors around you, listen to the sounds of birds or rustling leaves, and feel the texture of the ground beneath your feet. By all means go barefoot and soak up some of the earth's energy.

  4. Practice Mindfulness: Be present in the moment. Let go of worries about the past or future, and focus on the sights, sounds, and sensations of the present.

  5. Deep Breathing Exercises: Take deep, intentional breaths. Inhale the crisp, natural air, and exhale any tension or stress you may be carrying.

  6. Reflect: After your nature therapy session, take a moment to reflect on how you feel. Notice any shifts in your mood or mental state.

In a world that seems overly hectic, it's natural to want to find some peace. Nature Therapy is an accessible remedy - no prescriptions needed. All you need to do is go outside.
